The main towns in this area are: Alicante, capital of the province, is a friendly seaside city, overlooked by the spectacular Santa Bárbara castle and famous for its characteristic promenade; Elche has two world heritage awards: the Palmeral, the biggest palm tree grove in Europe, and the Misteri de Elche, a traditional play commemorating the death of the Virgin Mary. Inland Murcia is a city steeped in tradition, famous for its cathedral and wonderful cuisine.
